Coursework

All social studies majors complete the core courses. Students also complete courses in social studies teaching strategies. The major includes credit hours in:

Courses in ethnographic research, applied anthropology, a relevant elective class, and an intensive 6-credit internship in the area of the student's chosen focus, are required. Students will learn how to conduct research, understand that research in an anthropological context, and get experience using the knowledge they gain for solving problems in the real world.

The CAA requires students to take 15 credits, including upper-division courses in Ethnographic Methods (ANT 400) and Applied Anthropology (ANT 420). The rest of the certificate requirements are based on individual student interest, involving one elective (from a choice of more than 30 options in 13 different disciplines) and an intensive 6-credit summer internship in a location arranged by the student and his or her anthropology department mentor.

Coursework for foundational ASL introduces learners to beginning sign vocabulary and grammar, nonverbal grammatical elements, fingerspelling, and immersion into the world of ASL.

The digital badge is comprised of two (three credit) courses, a total of six credits:

  • ASL 201  American Sign Language 1
  • ASL 202  American Sign Language 2

The program requires completion of 84 credit hours. The degree requirements are designed to offer a comprehensive and rigorous program of study, encouraging the synthesis of information across didactic coursework and clinical experience. A final 12-month internship is required. As students progress through the program, they will transition from

  • primarily didactic to primarily clinical coursework;
  • in-house learning laboratory to full-time external clinical experience;
  • limited variety to greater variety of disordered patients; and
  • focus on developing skills specific to treating hearing and balance disorders to preparing for independent practice.

There is no research requirement to this program.
