Current GVSU Adult Learners
Jenn Maksimowski

What inspired you to begin or return to school, and how did
you decide to pursue your current major/program or degree?
I had been wanting to go back to school for a long time, but I
always felt like I didn't have enough time between my work and
personal life. I kept telling myself I'd do it eventually, but it
never felt like the right moment. Then, one day, I came across a post
on LinkedIn about the LEADS program, and something about it really
caught my attention. I felt like it was a sign, so I clicked on the
link and signed up for a meeting. That simple action set everything in
motion and reignited my desire to finish what I had started years ago.
Before diving into advertising, I spent 19 years in banking,
where I learned a lot, but I felt like I was ready for a change. After
transitioning into advertising, which I've now been doing for 11
years, I realized how much I enjoyed the creative and strategic
aspects of my work. However, something was still missing, completing
my degree had always been a personal goal. I wanted to finish what I
had started, and this program felt like the perfect opportunity to
make it happen.
Going back to school as an adult with so many responsibilities
was a big decision, but once I took that first step, it became clear
how much this was the right time for me. This program has given me the
chance to grow both personally and professionally, and I'm finally on
the path to achieving something that's been a long-time goal.
What challenges have you faced as an adult learner, and how
have you overcome (or working on overcoming) them?
I was absolutely terrified to go back to school, especially as an
adult learner. Many of my initial classes were general education
courses, like physics, which included an online lab that I had to
complete from home. I was worried about keeping up, but the coursework
was clear and easy to understand, and my professor was always
available for questions and support. That made the transition back to
school much smoother for me. Even now, I still get nervous when
starting a new class, but over time, I've found my rhythm and built
confidence in my ability to succeed.
How has balancing outside commitments such as work and family
impacted your studies, and what strategies have helped you succeed?
Balancing work, family, and school has definitely been a
challenge, but having the flexibility to take online courses and work
at the times that fit my schedule has made it much more manageable. I
was initially worried about how I would juggle everything, but I've
found that consistency in class schedules across courses has really
helped with my planning and time management.
One of the biggest strategies that has worked for me is
scheduling dedicated homework and study days. By setting aside
specific times to focus on school, I make sure I don't fall behind,
even when work and family life get busy. It's not always easy, but
staying disciplined and organized has allowed me to pursue my degree
while still being present for my career and loved ones. Seeing my
progress keeps me motivated, and I'm proud of how I've made it all work.
What has been the most rewarding part of your educational
journey so far?
The most rewarding part of my educational journey so far has been
achieving tangible milestones along the way. Earning a certificate in
Leadership and another in Project Management has been incredibly
motivating. These accomplishments remind me that I'm making real
progress toward my degree, and they give me a sense of achievement
even before I reach the finish line.
Knowing that I can earn these certificates while taking the
necessary classes for my degree keeps me inspired and reinforces that
I'm on the right path. Each milestone builds my confidence and pushes
me to keep going, making the journey even more fulfilling.
What advice would you give to other adults considering going
back to school but feeling uncertain or hesitant?
My advice to other adults considering going back to school would
be: Don't wait as long as I did. If it's something you truly want,
you'll find a way to make it happen. It can feel overwhelming at
first, but once you get started, it becomes more manageable. The key
is to believe in yourself and take that first step. You're capable of
balancing everything, and the sense of accomplishment along the way is
so worth it. If I can do it, so can you!
