Current GVSU Adult Learners
Achia Smith

What inspired you to begin or return to school, and how did
you decide to pursue your current major/program or degree?
My daughter will be going off to college, and I wanted to be in a
position where I could help her not only financially but also offer my
experience. I have been a Community Health Worker for 9 years now, and
I wanted to be able to do more.
What challenges have you faced as an adult learner, and how
have you overcome (or working on overcoming) them?
Time! There is never enough time in the day to complete
everything. I had to learn that it was okay not to be able to complete everything.
How has balancing outside commitments such as work and family
impacted your studies, and what strategies have helped you succeed?
Thankfully, I have a strong support system to help me. Whenever I
need a break from my kids or a motivational push, my family is always
there to help me.
What has been the most rewarding part of your educational
journey so far?
Getting the grades that I did not expect to be getting. I
currently have a 3.922 GPA. It also feels good for my children to see
me succeeding.
What advice would you give to other adults considering going
back to school but feeling uncertain or hesitant?
"This too shall pass!" Remember that things may seem
bad at times, but they will pass eventually and you will be able to
look back and laugh.
