Current GVSU Adult Learners
Kayla Myers

What inspired you to begin or return to school, and how did
you decide to pursue your current major/program or degree?
I decided I wanted to finally do something for myself and be the
first in my family to (somewhat) traditionally earn my degree.
What challenges have you faced as an adult learner, and how
have you overcome (or working on overcoming) them?
Making friends in my classes and major despite being older than
everyone. To do so, just trying remember that we all come from
different backgrounds and ultimately have the same general goal. Age
doesn't matter as much as one might think.
How has balancing outside commitments such as work and family
impacted your studies, and what strategies have helped you succeed?
Its challenging, more than most realize trying to work full time
to pay for a house and support sick family members while taking
classes full time is a lot, especially when you have no true support
system. Just stay true to who you are, your values, and goals!
What has been the most rewarding part of your educational
journey so far?
Seeing the progress I've made.
What advice would you give to other adults considering going
back to school but feeling uncertain or hesitant?
Just do it! Ultimately, its YOUR life and only YOU can make it
exactly how you want it to be if you put in the work!
