Digital Evolution Research is Almost Game Development

Though they might seem worlds apart, game development and scientific research in computational evolutionary biology share a common foundation. Agent-based models used in digital evolution research are analogous to non-playable characters in video games, just with different motivations and without the pretty graphics. Dr. Austin Ferguson, Assistant Professor in the GVSU College of Computing, will discuss how a change of mindset can switch us between these two fields, how skills transfer across them, and how many fields are often closer related than we might think.

The GVSU Computing Club is an organization where students can come together to grow socially, academically, and professionally.

We focus on creating a space where students can learn about the many opportunities available to them, engage with new and interesting technologies, make friends with other students, and network with many companies. We also bring in professors to talk about their experiences and research interests.

The Computing Club is a great organization for anyone interested in pursuing a computing-related career, deepening their understanding of the field, connecting with like-minded peers, or simply exploring new technology.

If you are interested in getting involved, the best place is the GVSU Computing Club Discord ( https://discord.gg/QURJEAn34P ). Once you join, you can stay connected with the club even if you can't attend our weekly meetings. While Discord is our primary method of communication, the club email is also a great way to contact us! ([email protected])
