Longtime WGVU announcer retires

David Moore, producer and announcer for WGVU Public Media, signed off the air Sept. 26 after 27 years of service.

Moore was the host of WGVU’s Morning Edition and also covered a wide range of news stories in addition to anchoring newscasts for Mid-Day West Michigan.

“I have had the honor and pleasure of waking up West Michigan,” said Moore. “You and I have laughed together, cried together, celebrated the good news and fretted over the bad. I’ve helped you plan your day, given you traffic and weather, and even kept you entertained with my sometimes corny one-liners. But, after 27 years behind this microphone, it’s time to step aside. It’s been a great run. Ending my time here at WGVU is a bitter sweet experience if ever there was one. Thank you for listening and God bless.”

Moore came to WGVU in 1987, then known as WGVC, when the station had just one FM station. He was WGVU FM’s first news director and laid the building blocks for the news department for what is now WGVU-FM 88.5 & 95.3.

Moore is a Vietnam veteran who began his career in broadcasting while enlisted in the Navy from 1968-1972. During his Navy career, he spent two-and-a-half years with the American Forces Radio while aboard two aircraft carriers. These carriers hosted closed circuit radio and television stations, broadcasting to more than 5,000 crew members.

Moore graduated from Specs Howard School of Broadcasting in 1973. He began his on-air career at WCER in Charlotte, Michigan. He then worked as an announcer and news director at a Port Huron radio station and, in 1985, was the morning news anchor at WOOD radio.

“David has been instrumental in delivering quality news stories to our community for 27 years while at WGVU,” said Michael Walenta, general manager of WGVU Public Media. “His personality and enthusiasm for the community are unmatched and will truly be missed. We thank David for all of his hard work and dedication over the years, and wish him the best in his retirement. And now, for the first time in 27 years, his alarm clock will not ring at 3:45 a.m. Now, that is true dedication.”

Veteran broadcaster Jennifer Moss will replace Moore beginning September 29.
