48th Avenue lighting project complete

Consumers Energy has completed a permanent lighting installation project along 48th Avenue near Grand Valley State University’s Allendale Campus.
Permanent street lights have replaced temporary lighting towers that illuminate the sidewalks along the west side of 48th Avenue between Pierce Street and Lake Michigan Drive. The project was part of an effort to enhance the safety of students.
The lighting district plan was approved by the Allendale Charter Township Board of Trustees in October. Grand Valley, the township and Consumers Energy worked together on the plan.
"The university appreciates the speed at which Consumers Energy worked to install the permanent lighting,” said Tim Thimmesch, associate vice president for Facilities Services. “The new lighting will benefit our students living in the off-campus complexes in the area.”
Construction will begin this summer on a sidewalk and lighting on Pierce Street between 42nd and 48th avenues.
