A candidate for the vice provost and dean of students position said it's an important time for public education because students need to be prepared to work in an increasingly complex workforce.

Loren Rullman, principal of higher education strategy and consulting for Workshop Studios and former associate vice president for Student Life at University of Michigan, answered questions and gave a public presentation April 3 in the Kirkhof Center.

Like other candidates, Rullman was asked to present and share ideas on a topic relevant to student success. He discussed his beliefs in being asset-minded and sharing responsibility in helping students succeed.

"Everyone has a role in student success," he said. "Student success means not only graduating, but graduating with the ability and skill set to navigate a complex world," he said.

Rullman served as associate vice president for Student Life at University of Michigan from 2007-2017. Before that, he was executive director of Indiana Memorial Union at Indiana University and director of University Unions at University of Michigan.

He received a bachelor's degree in advertising and Spanish from Valparaiso University, a master's degree in higher education from Indiana University and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy from University of Missouri, St. Louis.
