600 Latino youth attend pre-college conference

More than 600 Latino high school students from across Michigan participated in a youth conference May 3 on the Allendale Campus sponsored by a consortium of higher education admissions officers.
The ALSAME (Advocates for Latino Student Advancement in Michigan Education) Conference also drew 60 high school counselors and college representatives.
Jesse Bernal, vice president for Inclusion and Equity at Grand Valley, said it was the first time ALSAME was held on campus. Bernal said it's one of many community partnerships facilitated by the Division of Inclusion and Equity and the Enrollment Development Division that open the pathways to college for diverse students.
Salvador Lopez, associate director for Admissions, serves on the ALSAME executive board and was the lead conference organizer responsible for bringing this opportunity to Grand Valley.
