24th Summer Film explores struggles of a teenager growing up during the Great Depression
Wes is a shy, sensitive 12-year-old boy growing up poor during the Great Depression. Plagued by bullies, Wes' response to violence has always been to run away. But, when his family's well-being is at stake, Wes can't run anymore. This is the plot of the 24th annual Summer Film Project, "Down by the River," which wrapped production on July 22. Every year, the Summer Film Project provides students with the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals while producing films of varying lengths.

Students use mobile devices to find inspiration to create art for exhibit
What can the use of mobile devices teach people about their physical and emotional identities, likes and dislikes, and their community and environment? This was one foundational question that provided more than 25 students with the inspiration to create three-dimensional works of art for the exhibit "A Selfie: The Body Extended." The exhibit will be on display in the Mary Idema Pew Library through May 30.

Premiere set for 23rd Summer Film Project "For the Birds"
"For the Birds," the 23rd annual Summer Film Project at Grand Valley, will make its debut on the silver screen during an upcoming screening. The event will take place April 26 at Celebration! Cinema North and IMAX, located at 2121 Celebration Drive NE in Grand Rapids. "For the Birds" was written by James Sturtridge, a senior majoring in film and video production who also served as first assistant director on the crew.

Alumna to discuss overcoming roadblocks in K-12 art education
After more than 13 years of teaching art and being named the 2017 Teacher of the Year by the Michigan Art Education Association, Grand Valley alumna Tricia Erickson has a desire to pass along lessons she has learned throughout her career as an educator. "Landscape painter of weird narratives" to discuss art and international inspirations during upcoming event
Melanie Daniel, Grand Valley's current Padnos Distinguished Artist-in-Residence, draws much of her inspiration from her time living in both British Columbia and Israel for much of her life. Two exhibitions opening on the Allendale Campus in February will provide students in the Visual and Media Arts Department with opportunities to curate their own showcases while highlighting their artistic expertise. "Beyond the Frame" will be on display through February 16, and "Mixtape.jpg" will be on display February 19-March 2.

Art Gallery exhibit, events to explore the ebb and flow of artist's creative process
A new Art Gallery exhibition at Grand Valley will examine the ebb and flow of artist Herbert Murrie's creative process while reflecting back on his painting career and looking forward to a new body of his work. An opening reception for the exhibit will take place January 18. The exhibit will be on display January 15 through March 30.
