Julia, Smolinski, Japan
During the Summer 2023 semester, I was able to study abroad with the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU), during which I participated in their Summer Language Intensive Program. This program, which runs from early June to early August, is designed to engage college students of all Japanese language levels with immersive study of the language inside and outside of the classroom. During most of the weekends, I traveled to several larger cities in the Kansai (Western) region of Japan, including Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe. I made several of these trips with friends and classmates and several independently, and stayed in various accommodations, such as ryokan (traditional Japanese inns), hostels, and bed-and-breakfasts. I believe that being able to choose a study abroad program that benefitted myself and my goals in a unique, unforgettable way has been an essential aspect of the Honors education I have received in my years at GVSU.
Julia studied at Japan Center for Michigan Universities in Hikone, Japan, doing the Summer Language Intensive programming. Her major was International Relations, Minor: Music.
